Surprisingly this first week wasn’t as hard as I expected but I’m sure that’s because it hasn’t gotten old yet. By not over-shopping in Peru before starting this ban as well as not spending money on food or activities while I was there I was able to approach the end of the month, bills all paid, with about $2000. That NEVER happens and tbqh I’m still not sure about the math but what I know is I had $2000. After I listened to Dave Ramsey’s book The Total Money Makeover, I jumped in to step #1 and took $1000 out and put it in the safe as my emergency fund. That left me with about $1097. There’s three days left in the month and I’m proud to say I still have $880 (+ my emergency fund). Most of the money spent has gone to groceries or going out to eat with Hunter but I still stuck to my budget of $200 per month max on going out to eat so I’d say this first week, albeit a small victory, has been a success. If I hadn’t told myself no so many times because of the shopping ban I’d definitely had made some purchases I didn’t necessarily need like those $79 sunglasses from Nordstrom, that $150 blanket from the pawn shop and that $16 neon cactus lamp. I’d also have definitely bought food from work, which has been the most challenging thing to not spend on. There’s been so many times this week at work where I felt tired and just wanted to hit the vending machine for a diet mountain dew but couldn’t because of the ban. I’m glad I didn’t though. I’m going to go to Costco today and buy myself a few packs of drinks and snacks for work to help ward off those temptations.
I’m really looking forward to July for a lot of reasons. Firstly, Friday is my last day at Banner, and while I’m grateful for the opportunity they provided me in being able to relocate here in Arizona the culture and workflow of that facility leaves much to be desired (to put it nicely). I’m mostly excited to work. I have a lot of night shifts and weekends scheduled this month at Dignity and I’m hoping by the end of the month between the extra work and the shopping ban I’ll have $3000 to put towards debts. It may be an unrealistically lofty goal but it’s what I’m going for. I’m going to pay off my Ipad and use the rest towards my Barclay card. I can’t believe the amount of money I’ve lost to that thing. I hate it! Which is why I’m fucking pumped up to finally make some progress on it. Secondly, I’m going to New Jersey with Hunter and I think that will be a really nice break from the work grind. He’s never been and NJ is pretty cool the first couple times. Anyway, I can’t focus – I’m watching Up. I’ll update in two weeks or so after I have a better idea of where my finances are heading for the month. 🙂
